Laterally Inhomogeneous Au Intercalation in Epitaxial Graphene on SiC(0 0 0 1): A Multimethod Electron Microscopy Study

چکیده
Epitaxial graphene is of particular interest because of its tunable electronic structure. One important approach to tune the electronic properties of graphene relays on intercalating atomic species between graphene and the topmost silicon carbide layer. Here, we investigated the morphology and electronic structure of gold-intercalated epitaxial graphene using a multitechnique approach combining spectroscopic photoemission low-energy electron microscopy (SPELEEM) for chemical and structur‐ al characterization at mesoscopic length scale and with transmission electron micro‐ scopy (STEM) at the atomic level. Deposition of gold on ex situ prepared graphene on SiC(0 0 0 1) results in the partial intercalation of Au adatoms under graphene, with the formation of a buffer layer of variable thickness. Gold has also shown to aggregate in nanometer-sized clusters lying on top of the same graphene film. X-ray photo-emission electron microscopy measurements indicate that Au induces only small changes in the doping of the graphene layer, which does not develop a quasi free-standing behavior.

Recent Advances in 2D-Band Structure Imaging by k-PEEM and Perspectives for Technological Materials
The imaging of surfaces using the PhotoElectron Emission Microscopy (PEEM) technique has recently received considerable interest, mainly thanks to the use of high brilliance synchrotron radiation which facilitates the study of surface properties and chemical selectivity [1, 2]. By placing a transfer lens in the optical column of a high transmission and full energy-filtering PEEM, it is possible...
متن کاملMicro-Raman analysis of the influence of hydrogen intercalation on the epitaxial graphene grown on 4H-SiC(0001) substrate K.Grodecki
It is commonly accepted that properties of epitaxial graphene (EG) grown on SiC are determined by interaction with substrate. It was found, that hydrogen intercalation of EG grown on SiC(0001) substrates by sublimation is a promising method to increase the mobility of carriers [1]. As verified by Raman spectroscopy [2] sublimation grown samples show much stronger interaction with the SiC substr...
متن کاملStudies of Li intercalation of hydrogenated graphene on SiC(0001)
The effects of Li deposition on hydrogenated bilayer graphene on SiC(0001) samples, i.e. on quasi-freestanding bilayer graphene samples is studied using low energy electron microscopy, micro-low-energy electron diffraction and photoelectron spectroscopy. After deposition, some Li atoms form islands on the surface creating defects that are observed to disappear after annealing. Some other Li ato...
متن کاملThe effect of doping Graphene Quantum Dots with K, B, N, and Cl on its emitted spectrum
In this work, the effect of doping Graphene Quantum Dots (GQDs) on their emission spectra has been studied. First, graphene has been deposited on SiC substrate by using sublimation method. Second, doped-GQDs have been distributed on the surface of graphene via drop casting. The structure of the samples have been studied and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy ...
متن کاملElectronic structures of an epitaxial graphene monolayer on SiC(0001) after gold intercalation: a first-principles study.
The atomic and electronic structures of an Au-intercalated graphene monolayer on the SiC(0001) surface were investigated using first-principles calculations. The unique Dirac cone of graphene near the K point reappeared as the monolayer was intercalated by Au atoms. Coherent interfaces were used to study the mismatch and the strain at the boundaries. Our calculations showed that the strain at t...
